In a report for The Sunday Telegraph, the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) has been tracking the number and type of companies that have been increasing employment in each of the past three years, covering the period of the recession and stuttering recovery. Each business had to employ more than 10 staff and achieve more than 20pc employment growth for three consecutive years to qualify.
Results show that across the 63 largest towns and cities, London remains the catalyst for the sheer volume of private sector job creation and new business generation.
Some 10pc of its 24,697 businesses trading in the city at the end of 2010 meet the fast growth definition. Outside the capital, a wide range of urban areas stand out. The top ten areas are as follows
